Greenways and Bikeways in Burnaby and Vancouver

Another local bike ride with the long lens capturing some fresh updates to the Central Valley Greenway on my morning commute, then a few photos from a quick trip to Downtown Vancouver after work taking in some Seawall scenes and neighbourhood bikeways…

It’s pretty nice when your colleagues design some upgrades to your commute… I have a couple of options to get to work… The scenic way takes me down to the Central Valley Greenway, but before getting to that, there was always a non AAA bit on Sperling Avenue that was an annoyance. Recently, the two vehicle lanes that merged to one just north of Broadway are gone and have been replaced with a wide multi-use pathway and boulevard… Awesome!

Transit…

Not transit…

Then Central Valley Greenway proper… This is another ISL project… Again by my colleagues… When I first heard this was happening… From a purely personal perspective, I was a bit sad to lose the previous gravel path… It was a little escape into nature… But from a professional perspective, it’s now a much better all weather transportation corridor for all ages and abilities… Another good addition to the City’s active transportation network, and less need to clean my bike when taking this route in winter…

Works on foot too of course…

Weathered signs…

The long straight… well sorta straight…

Still Creek Drive… I’d like to see hazard markers facing people cycling eastbound too…

The rail crossing at Gilmore… Does anybody follow this sign to go to the right of the island…

After work and heading downtown under the SkyTrain… Still on the Central Valley Greenway…

Didn’t stop on the way there… At Science World…

Took a little spin along the Seawall but had places to be…

Dude chilling in the park…

Designs focusing the conflict area and encouraging people on bicycles to yield to pedestrians… Pavement markings could maybe use a redo to skinny up the actual crosswalk…

The Dutch style protected intersection at 1st and Quebec… Do people go on the vehicle green or the walk signal… If you said on the walk signal… What happens on a bike once the don’t walk signal activates… A bike is quicker than a pedestrian… I’d like to see more bicycle signals…

Ontario bikeway making it safer through volume reduction over say vertical deflection… Maybe my favourite photo of the day…

And then working my way back to Burnaby on Union…

Switching to Adanac…

Then back to the same spot we were at in the first image… The Adanac/Clarke crossing… Great to see so many people biking…

That’s probably the last blog post for a month or so… But there should be some interesting ones coming late October or November… Reminder that I send notifications out via email when I post, so sign up for the newsletter above if that sounds like something you want in your inbox…
